SPEAKERS’ PRESENTATION – Cranes of the World – November 2, 2024

According to the International Crane Foundation (ICF), “Cranes are among the most endangered families of birds in the world, with 10 of the 15 species threatened. ICF’s global priorities span Africa, East Asia, Southeast Asia, and North America, while (their) headquarters in Baraboo, Wisconsin, serves aa a global center for conservation leadership and training.” Paul Tebbel, representing ICF, presents an overview of cranes worldwide, with an emphasis on those found in North America.

Paul Tebbel, has spent over 45 years watching, researching, and learning about cranes. He studied Sandhill Cranes as an undergraduate in Michigan and researched Sandhill Cranes in central Ontario for his Masters’ Thesis. Paul managed National Audubon’s Rowe Sanctuary on the Platte River in Nebraska from 1995-2006. A familiar presence at the Lodi Sandhill Crane Festival, Paul has also led field trips and given presentations throughout the western United States, including New Mexico’s Festival of the Cranes at Bosque del Apache NWR.

Paul Tebbel grew up in southern Michigan and has a BS in Biology from Northern Michigan University, with undergraduate study on Sandhill Cranes in the Hiawatha National Forest, MI. He continued to study cranes for his MS in Zoology from the University of Western Ontario, where his research was on the status of Sandhill Cranes in central Ontario. Paul managed National Audubon’s 1,400 acre Rowe Sanctuary on the Platte River in Nebraska for Sandhill Cranes and other water birds from 1995 to 2006. He then served as the Executive Director of three conservation and nature education nonprofits in New Mexico and California from 2006 until retiring in 2018.
