TOUR #1123 – Cranes and Agriculture, November 4, 2023

Join us for a two and a half mile walk along the Mokelumne River levee on Staten Island to see how agriculture and migrating birds can live in harmony.  Staten Island biologists will highlight agricultural practices that enhance wildlife habitat. From the vantage point of the levee, which is not open to the public, you will see a wide variety of migrating birds in diverse settings. There will be opportunities to see cranes in areas where they feed.

Time: 8:50 – 11:00 a.m.

DIRECTIONS: This tour begins and ends at the grain mill on Staten Island. This is the large structure with grain silos that is located on Staten Island Road just south of Walnut Grove/Thornton Road. It is very visible after you cross over the Mokelumne River. Parking is available next to the mill. Meet your guide at 8:50 a.m. for check-in and prepare for a two mile hike along the levee.

Customers who register online for a tour after that date must show the guide a hard copy or phone display of the email receipt. The receipt may go to your spam folder.

Unsold tickets will be available during the festival and can be purchased on this website.

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

This tour begins and ends at the grain mill on Staten Island. This is the large structure with grain silos that is located on Staten Island Road just south of Walnut Grove/Thornton Road. Parking is available next to the mill. Meet your guide near the mill by 8:50 a.m. Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to walk two and a half miles. Dress for the weather.

Cancellation Policy: Full refunds (minus a 3% processing fee) are available prior to a tour upon the customer’s request at tours@lodisandhillcrane.org. A full refund is automatically issued for any events cancelled by the festival organizers.

Meet your guide at the information kiosk by the grain silos on Staten Island Road at 8:50 a.m.

It is best to dress in layers.  The delta can be very cool in the morning and evening, but quite warm in the afternoon.

There is no food or water available on this tour, so participants are encouraged to bring a snack and a bottle of water if they like.

No, this tour does not require a Lands Pass.

Binoculars and a spotting scope may be brought on this tour but must be light and compact enough to carry several miles.

Yes there are restrooms or a port-a-potty available at the tour site.  Nevertheless, everyone should use the restroom before the tour begins.

This tour requires the ability to walk several miles over uneven or rough terrain

In general, it is not acceptable to bring dogs to the festival or on tours because they may interfere with other participants or disturb wildlife. Service animals must be handled so as not to disturb other people or wildlife. 

There are many insects, including mosquitos in the delta, so long sleeve shirts and long pants are recommended. Insect repellent is recommended.
