TOUR #324 – Crane Fly-In Staten Island #1 – November 1, 2024

DESCRIPTION: This tour combines a crane fly-in with birding on Staten Island, a premier Nature Conservancy/Conservation Farms and Ranches location, to learn what the birds already know – this is one of the best places in the Delta to spend the winter.  The fly-in here typically numbers into the thousands, with both Greater and Lesser Sandhill Cranes. In addition, ducks, geese, Tundra Swans, Great Blue Herons, egrets, and numerous other bird species may be viewed.   Experienced docents will highlight the history of Staten Island and its partnership with the Cosumnes River Preserve.

TOUR TIME: 4:20 – 6:30 p.m.

NOTE: This Friday night tour may cause customers to arrive back at Hutchins Street Square after the Opening Reception begins. We will hold refreshments if you are registered for the event.

DIRECTIONS: This tour begins and ends at Hutchins Street Square (125 S. Hutchins Street) in Lodi, California. Check in at the registration table at Hutchins Street Square by 4:00 p.m. You will be directed to the north door to meet your guides and receive instructions. Transportation to and from Staten Island is provided by charter bus. Loading will begin 4:20 p.m.

LANDS PASS:No Lands Pass is required

LATE REGISTRATION: Customers who register online after October 26 must present a hard copy or phone display the email receipt to their tour guide at the time of the tour.

WHERE & WHEN TO MEET YOUR GUIDE: This tour begins and ends at Hutchins Street Square in Lodi, California.  Bus loading begins at 4:20. Check in at the registration table 20 minutes before the loading time.

NOTE: All personal items must be carried on your lap during the bus ride.

 Cancellation Policy: Full refunds (minus a 3% processing fee) are available prior to a tour upon the customer’s request at tours@lodisandhillcrane.org. A full refund is automatically issued for any events cancelled by the festival organizers.

TOUR GUIDE: Conservation Farms Biologist

Check in: Hutchins Street Square registration table by 4:00 pm. You will be directed to the bus loading area at the north side of the building.

You will meet your guide and be given instructions prior to loading the bus.

The bus will unload at the Hutchins Street Square north parking lot.

It is best to dress in layers.  The delta can be very cool in the morning and evening, but quite warm in the afternoon.

There is no food or water available on this tour, so participants are encouraged to bring a snack and a bottle of water if they like.

No, this tour does not require a Lands Pass.

Binoculars and a spotting scope may be brought on this tour, as long as there is space on the bus or can be held on your lap.

You should definitely bring your camera.

Handicap accessible and / or port-a-potty may be available at the tour site. Nevertheless, everyone should use the restroom before the tour begins at Hutchins Street Square.

This tour requires the ability to walk short distances on uneven ground and stand for an hour or more.

In general, it is not acceptable to bring dogs to the festival or on tours because they may interfere with other participants for disturb wildlife. Service animals must be handled so as not to disturb other people or wildlife. 

There are many insects, including mosquitoes in the delta, so long sleeve shirts and long pants are recommended. Insect repellent is recommended.

Yes, few handicap accessible spots are available at Hutchins Street Square. But, the bus may not be equipped for wheelchairs. Staten Island is not easily or safely accessible to wheelchairs.
