TOUR #2923 – Early Morning Crane Photography – November 5, 2023

This tour is designed for experienced photographers with a basic knowledge of their camera (aperture, shutter speed and ISO). If you are interested in learning more about how to capture high quality images in low light and fog, with the challenges of early morning set ups, this is the tour for you. Your guide will cover topics such as composition and framing, the effects of lighting, birds and their early morning behaviors, and exposure selections.  Come prepared with your camera, mid telephoto lens (100mm), telephoto lens (300-400mm preferred), and clothing appropriate for cold and wet conditions.

TOUR TIME: 5:50 – 8:00 a.m.

NOTE: DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME ENDS SATURDAY NIGHT

 

DIRECTIONS: Meet your guide on Saten Island Road where it intersects with Thornton/Walnut Grove Road. Look for the large grain mill/silos. Arrive by 5:50 a.m.  Be sure to give yourself plenty of time to arrive at the tour. Delta roads can be dark and foggy at that hour. 

Driving north on Interstate 5.

  1. Drive north 9 miles past the Highway 12/Lodi exit to the Thornton/Walnut Grove exit.
  2. Exit and turn left under the freeway.
  3. Drive west 3.5 miles to Staten Island Road and turn left. (You will know you are almost to Staten Island Road when you cross the Mokelumne River. If you cross the river for a second time, you went too far.)
  4. Drive south on Staten Island Road a short distance
  5. Check in with your guide at the Kiosk/information board across the street from the large grain silos 6:00 a.m.

Tour guides will receive a list of customers who have registered by October 30, 2022.

Customers who register online for a tour after that date must show the guide a hard copy or phone display of the email receipt. The receipt may go to your spam folder.

Unsold tickets will be available during the festival and can be purchased on this website.

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

DIRECTIONS: This tour takes place at Staten Island. Travel West from Interstate 5 on Walnut Grove Road about 4 miles and turn left on Staten Island Road. (When you cross the Mokelumne River you are only a few hundred yards from Staten Island Road.) If you cross the Mokelumne River a second time, you went too far. Meet your guide at the grain silo on Staten Road at 6:00 am. Plan extra time to arrive because it will be dark and possibly rainy, or foggy.

Cancellation Policy: Full refunds (minus a 3% processing fee) are available prior to a tour upon the customer’s request at tours@lodisandhillcrane.org. A full refund is automatically issued for any events cancelled by the festival organizers.

It is best to dress in layers. Bring rain gear in case it is wet. The area can be very cool in the morning and evening, but quite warm in the afternoon.

There is no food or water available on this tour, so participants are encouraged to bring a snack and a bottle of water if they like.

No, this tour does not require a Lands Pass.

Binoculars and spotting scope may be brought on this tour.

A porta-potty is at this site.

Participants will need to be able to walk medium distances on grass or muddy and uneven ground and stand for an hour or more.

Handicap parking is not available.

This tour is not wheelchair accessible.

In general, it is not acceptable to bring dogs to the festival or on tours because they may interfere with other participants or disturb wildlife. Service animals must be handled so as not to disturb other people or wildlife.

There are many insects, including mosquitoes in the area, so long sleeve shirts and long pants are recommended. Insect repellent is recommended.
